I Served

I served
didn’t want to
didn’t want Canada either.
I am embarrassed that I never really went to war.
Mine was the daily stream of wounded.
Taking them off the planes, feeding them,
medicating them, changing their dressings
and then sending them on their way with
the trucks of body bags
from outside my barracks window.
My war
is the memory of
too many pain filled planes
headed home
to worried families.
